Further Distractions Underground Atlanta Constructed on the underpinnings of early Atlanta, this one time railroad gulch (ravine) is now a spirited urban marketplace, featuring restaurants, speciality shops, street vendors and entertainment emporiums, which are all underground. This is perfect for a less than perfect day as Underground Atlanta can be accessed direct from the MARTA station at Five Points. Unless you have sequestered yourself in a very remote location, however, there is very little in Underground Atlanta that is not replicated in many other malls in the USA. Peachtree at Alabama Streets Tel: (404) 523 2311. Transport: MARTA Five Points Station. Opening hours: Mon-Sat 1000-2130, Sun 1000-1700. Admission: Free. Atlanta Botanical Garden This is where Atlanta takes time to stop and smell the roses. Tropical, desert and endangered plants from around the world are shown year round in the Fuqua Conservatory, just 4.8km (three miles) from Downtown. The gardens are perched on the edge of Piedmont Park and contain more than 3000 ornamental plants in the display gardens. 1345 Piedmont Avenue, Piedmont Park Tel: (404) 876 5859. Website: www.atlantabotanicalgarden.org Transport: MARTA bus 36 from Arts Center Station (Mon-Sat), MARTA bus 31 from Lindbergh Station (Sun). Opening hours: Tues-Sun 0900-1800. Admission: US$7 (concessions available); free Thurs 1500-1800. Center for Puppetry Arts This centre houses a museum, theatre and workshop spaces. The purpose behind it is to explore puppetry as an ancient and popular art form. Video performances of Wayland Flower and Madame are shown to demonstrate the use of adult humour in puppetry. Madame herself is also on display, along with other adult puppets. The Center for Puppetry Arts is the only facility of its kind in the continental United States. 1404 Spring Street Tel: (404) 873 3809. Website: www.puppet.org Transport: MARTA: Arts Center Station. Opening hours: Visitors should telephone in advance for performance and workshop schedule times. Admission: US$8 (concessions available). |
