Website: www.atlanta-airport.com Atlanta’s airport, Hartsfield, is the national and international gateway to the city. Located 14.5km (nine miles) south of the city, the airport underwent an extensive renovation programme in preparation for the 1996 Olympic Games and now handles 74 million domestic passengers plus five million international passengers annually which makes it the busiest airport in the world. Major airlines: Atlanta is the hub and home base of Delta Airlines (tel: (800) 221 1212; website: www.delta.com). Delta’s flights constitute an estimated 60-70% of Hartsfield’s traffic, connecting Atlanta to all major US cities, the Caribbean and Mexico, Europe and other international destinations. Other important domestic carriers include: AirTran, American Airlines, Continental, TWA, United Airlines and US Airways, while international carriers include: Air Canada, Air France, British Airways, Japan Airlines, KLM and Lufthansa. Approximate flight times to Atlanta: From London is 9 hours 15 minutes; from New York is 2 hours 20 minutes; from Los Angeles is 4 hours 45 minutes; from Toronto is 2 hours and from Sydney is 14 hours. Airport facilities: These include fast-food outlets, licensed restaurants, Internet kiosks, retail shops supplying everything from alcohol to stationery, a post office, an interdenominational chapel, bank, ATMs, bureaux de change, tourist information and car hire (including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty). Business facilities: Hartsfield has an executive conference centre (tel: (404) 530 4251), with meeting rooms, computers, teleconferencing and audiovisual equipment. The centre can supply limousine services and catering for groups. Arrival/departure tax: None. Transport to the city: MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority; tel: (404) 848 4800; website: www.itsmarta.com), operates light rail services daily 0500-0100 from the airport to Downtown and throughout the metropolitan area. A single ticket to Five Points Station (Downtown) costs US$1.75 (journey time - 20 minutes). Schedules may be obtained from the MARTA airport station (tel: (404) 848 4711), Traveler’s Aid and the International Information counter. Taxi services take 15-60 minutes to Five Points, depending upon traffic; fares vary between US$20-26 according to the number of passengers and amount of luggage. Shuttle van services to Downtown hotels and the outlying regions are also available; fares vary between US$8-25 depending on the location. |
