Area: 2247 sq km (868 sq miles).

Population: 237,800 (1992).

Population Density: 105.8 per sq km.

Capital: São Miguel: Ponta Delgada; Faial: Horta; Terceira: Angra do Heroismo.

GEOGRAPHY: The Azores are a widely separated group of nine islands in the Atlantic, due west of mainland Portugal. The islands are São Miguel, Santa Maria, Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico, Faial, Flores and Corvo. The islands are mountainous in the interior and forested, leading down to long beaches and fishing harbours. There are several hot springs and spas.

Time: GMT - 1 (GMT from last Sunday in March to Saturday before last Sunday in October).

Electricity: 220/110 volts AC, 50Hz. Round two-pin plugs are in use.

Communications:  Services are similar to, but less extensive than, those offered on mainland Portugal.
