General Information
Area: 60.5 sq km (23.4 sq miles).
Population: 28,166 (2001).
Population Density: 465.6 per sq km.
Capital: San Marino. Population: 4451 (2001).
GEOGRAPHY: San Marino is a tiny state bordered by the Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna to the north and east and Marche to the south and west. The landscape is for the most part green with rolling hills, dominated by the three peaks of Mount Titano. Within San Marino lie the capital of the same name and eight villages.
Government: Republic since 1599. Heads of State and Government: Capitani Regenti from Oct 2002 to April 2003 are Giuseppe Maria Morganti and Mauro Chiaruzzi. The Captains Regent are elected by the Great General Council every six months.
Language: Italian.
Religion: Roman Catholic.
Time: GMT + 1 (GMT + 2 from last Sunday in March to Saturday before last Sunday in October).
